Events to Peep for October, November, & December

Kick off the month on Sunday, October 1st, with a matinee showing of the world premiere play "Something Moving: A Meditation on Maynard" by famed writer Pearl Cleage, which explores the election of Maynard Jackson, Atlanta’s first Black mayor, from the vantage point of a historian and insider – Cleage, who served as Jackson’s press secretary during and following his campaign. 2 p.m. Tickets: $26+ Ford's Theatre. 511 Tenth Street, NW, Washington D.C. 20004. Keep the celebration of our history going on Friday, October 6th (also HBCU night), with a showing of the stage play "Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill," which highlights the songbird's March 1959 performance at Emerson's in South Philadelphia four months before her passing. 8 p.m. Tickets: $74+. Close out the month how you started with a bit more of history on Sunday, October 29th, courtesy of American playwright and screenwriter Katori Hall's "The Mountaintop." Summary: The night before his untimely death, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. returns to his room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis after delivering a speech to local sanitation workers. While waiting for room service, he is visited by a mysterious and beautiful maid, Camae, with whom he begins a humorous and flirtatious conversation that progresses into a soul-searching discussion about their mutual hopes and fears. 2 p.m.  Tickets: $46+. With the current political landscape giving us enough to cry about, take a hilarious escape from it all on Sunday, November 12th, when you head to the Arena Stage for the closing production of "POTUS: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass Are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive." Summary: When the Commander-in-Chief publicly calls his wife a “See You Next Tuesday,” all H-E-Double Hockey Sticks breaks loose. In this searingly funny Broadway hit, POTUS follows how seven women of dramatically different backgrounds minimize the damage done by male arrogance and political posturing, in an endearing homage to the women who keep things running behind the scenes. 2 p.m. Tickets: $76+.
